Kids' Food Basket

Agency Description
Our purpose is to empower communities to address childhood hunger and to nourish children to reach their full potential, in school and in life. Good food has the power to shape lives and change the future. That's why we believe healthy food is a right, not a privilege for every child. But not all kids have access to nutritious meals; one in five children is affected by hunger in West Michigan. Together, we can do something about it. By providing a direct service to a direct need, children that may lack a nourishing evening meal receive one at the end of each school day, eliminating any barriers to access. These meals are made with love by over 250 daily volunteers. Our dignified response to hunger empowers community-wide action. Through our Sack Supper program, kids get well-balanced, nutritious meals, filling the gap schools and parents often can't afford. We are currently serving these evening meals to approximately 9,000 children at over 50 locations across Ottawa, Allegan, Kent, and Muskegon counties, and continue to grow to meet the need in our communities. A Sack Supper is a free, well-balanced evening meal full of nutritious food delivered to children so that they can perform their best. Sack Suppers are distributed within classrooms at the end of each school day and during summer programs, meaning every child in need can get one easily and safely. Every Sack Supper includes: one serving of fruit, one serving of fresh vegetables, one serving of protein, and a healthy snack. Our Sack Suppers are made possible by the engine that makes Kids' Food Basket work- our volunteers. Caring people lend their hearts and hands to make, decorate, and deliver Sack Suppers to dozens of schools and summer sites. Our headquarters, satellite locations, and community settings offer groups of any size and ability a range of volunteer opportunities.
