Safe Harbor Children's Advocacy Center is a nonprofit organization providing a lifeline to victims of child abuse and neglect. This free help to children and non-offending caregivers includes a safe place for children to share their story through a forensic interview, counseling, a body safety medical exam, victim advocacy, prevention education, and court advocacy. After a child comes to Safe Harbor to share their story of abuse through the forensic interview, then law enforcement, child protective services, the prosecutor, and Safe Harbor staff discuss the individual childâ??s need for counseling, a medical body safety examination and/or additional services. Additional services Safe Harbor provides are victim advocacy, prevention education, and court advocacy. When a child is being abused and neglected, the court system often steps in to protect the child. Sometimes the court finds it is in the best interest and safety of the child to be removed from their home and placed in foster care or ideally with a suitable relative. The child needs someone that is consistently focusing on their needs and wants, someone that gives them a voice when they cannot express it themselves, and to represent their best interest. The person that fits this role is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). A CASA is able to be a powerful voice advocating for the childâ??s best interests. CASAs cannot change the past but they can help advocate for a safer tomorrow.
